STP T-Shirt Contest

•May 6, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I did this for a Stone Temple Pilots T shirt Contest. Apparently the band is getting back together and want some shirts for their upcoming tour. I did this design basically by just taking the Stone Temple Pilot name as literally as I could.

I found and image of a leather fetish pilot mask, drew it, added a stone type texture, then made i little cave like door down by the neck.  I think it’s fitting for STP considering they did have a song called Sex Type Thing.  To Vote go here…  http://www.designbyhumans.com/vote/detail/72823

New Man with a Mustache shirts!

•April 7, 2010 • 1 Comment

Not sure which way the shirts will go after they hit the printers, but I think either way the shirts will look pretty sweet. You can always tell how cool a band shirt is by how often you see the shirt around town. Looking forward to seeing this one. I bet the first person I see with it on is Dave Dodge.

Rock the Book!

•March 1, 2010 • Leave a Comment

These are two of five posters I did for a “Rock the Book” event happening on April 23rd. Both are completely different than my normal style, but I really like how they turned out. I will definitely be revisiting this technique for future projects.

color and music

•February 25, 2010 • 1 Comment

I get asked a lot about colors. How I choose them, how I make certain pictures have “moods” or i get comments like “excellent use of color.. how did you decide on those colors?” I am by no means an expert on the use of color in design or illustration. I definitely am not the one to call if you need someone to pick out colors for your home. (You can ask my fiance if you need help in that department) Anyone who has ever taken an art class in their life will recall the color wheel the teacher usually throws at you the first day of class, or ROYGBIV being installed in to your brains hard drive so you can remember the colors of the rainbow.

It helps you get a basic understanding of how colors relate to the other colors but does it really help you to know that purples complimentary color is yellow?

Yes.

Does that mean every time you use purple you automatically throw some yellow up there next to it to make the eyes get excites by looking at it?

No.

Color is not that simple.

If you really think about color, it has much more meaning than the visual aspect. It relates to all types of emotions and feelings. Color is very similar to music in many ways. I wish in art school when they handed out the color wheel they would divide up all the students in groups and assign them a color from the wheel and tell them to come up with as many words as possible that can describe the color they were given.

Then put those words in the locations of the color wheel. You would see that most colors contain polar opposites meanings within the color.

Example : red = love and anger/hate

The way the words relate almost react the same way as the colors themselves react in accordance to the color wheel.

You change the shade, you change the feeling.

You change how you apply the color, it also changes the feeling.

To me this is similar to playing a note on the guitar and changing how hard you strum, or mute the note etc. Same thing with any instrument really.

So.. I guess there are so many variables out there on what your final outcome will be, how can anyone actually become a master of color?

Don’t ask me.

I guess all we can ever be is students, and take the time step back, look at our work… and try to figure out what it is we’re trying to say.

Funny thing is, it probably will mean something completely different to whoever is viewing it.

Just like music is, to whoever may be  listening.

This is colette.

I’m pretty sure she took this picture of herself, and then i stole it from her myspace and drew it.

I am turning out to be quite the picture thief.
